LIFESTYLE PRODUCT PHOTOGRAPHY
Showing Your Product in Context
The aim of lifestyle product photography is to demonstrate your product in its “natural habitat”. This may mean showing it in use in an appropriate location, or creating a simulated one in the studio with appropriate props. The end result is imagery that shows your product looking great, in an environment your customers can easily relate to.
Lifestyle product photography is very popular on social media, where it can help establish a brand’s identity and aesthetic. From a customer’s point of view, these images illustrate how the product will look in their home, garden, office, etc. Often, lifestyle product photography presents an idealised or aspirational environment to ensure the item looks as appealing as possible.
As the examples on this page show, lifestyle product photography can be fairly minimal, with one or two simple props or background to give the product context, or it can be more complex, using a location and model to demonstrate the item. It can even be a product image edited into a stock image of a landscape or other scenario. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution - what’s right for a specific product all depends on the brand and the intended customer.
Lifestyle product photography requires close cooperation between client and photographer, as the final image needs to communicate exactly the right message to the brand’s target customer.
